Keratin Bond Extensions, Explained
If you have been researching extensions you have run into a wall of method names. Here is a clear explanation of keratin bonds — what they are, how they behave, and who they are right for.
What a Keratin Bond Actually Is
Keratin is the protein your hair is already made of. In this method, a small strand of extension hair is attached to a small section of your own hair using a keratin-based bond, warmed so it moulds around the hair and then sets.
Instead of one wide attachment, you get many small, individual points spread across the head. That is what makes the method blend so well.
Why I Work With Them
- They are discreet. Small individual bonds sit flat and stay hidden, even when hair is up.
- They move naturally. Because the hair is attached in many small sections, it falls and swings like your own.
- They suit almost any texture when placed correctly.
- They are versatile. You can wear the hair up, part it differently, and style it normally.
- They are gentle when done and removed properly — no tape residue, no sewn-in tension across a row.
The Appointment
A full installation is a long appointment — several hours of precise work — and this is what happens:
1. Consultation and colour matching. We agree the length, the volume, and blend the shades.
2. Wash and prep. Hair is washed with no conditioner, so nothing coats the hair where bonds will sit.
3. Sectioning and mapping. I plan where every bond goes and how much weight each section carries.
4. Application, strand by strand, working up from the nape.
5. Cutting and blending. This is what makes it look like your hair rather than added hair — the extensions are cut into your existing shape.
6. Styling and aftercare. We go through the routine together before you leave.
Living With Them
The first day or two you will feel the bonds. That fades quickly. After that they should be comfortable and, honestly, easy to forget about — as long as the routine is followed:
- No washing for the first 48 hours
- Brush several times a day with the right brush
- Never sleep on wet hair, braid it loosely at night
- No products on the bonds, no conditioner at the roots
Removal Is Part of the Method
Bonds are removed with a professional solution that breaks them down so they slide off without pulling. Done properly, your own hair is not damaged.
Done at home with whatever is under the sink, it very much can be. Please never pick at, pull or cut bonds yourself — this is the step where most extension horror stories are made.
Who They Suit
Keratin bonds work well if you want length, volume or both with a truly invisible result, and you are happy to maintain them every 2 to 3 months.
They are less suitable if you are not able to commit to the daily brushing routine, or if your hair is currently too fragile to carry them — in which case we get the hair healthier first.
Hygiene, Because It Matters
Every brush, comb, clip and tool I use is cleaned and disinfected before every client, work surfaces are sanitised between appointments, and single-use items are disposed of after each client. You should expect that as standard from anyone who works this close to your scalp.
